Helen Bradley shows how to tame a growing list of bookmarks.
Organising Netscape Bookmarks
To organise Netscape bookmarks and group them into folders, choose Bookmarks and Edit Bookmarks. Create a new folder by clicking just above where the folder is to go, select File and New Folder, and then type a name for the folder and click OK. Drag existing bookmarks and drop them on top of the folder to put them inside it. You can also position folders inside other folders using the same process.
Separators are horizontal lines you can add to your bookmark list to create a break between groups of folders or bookmarks. To add a separator from within the Bookmarks window, choose the bookmark or folder above where the separator will go and then select File and New Separator.
If you want to quickly find entries in your list, choose Bookmarks, Edit Bookmarks, Edit and then Find in Bookmarks. Type the text to search for and, to make a thorough search, enable the Name, Location and Description checkboxes and click OK. You'll be taken to the first matching bookmark and you can continue searching by pressing the Control and G keys at the same time.
If you share the computer with others, you can each have your own bookmark list. To create a new list, save the existing one with a new name by choosing Bookmarks, Edit Bookmarks, File and then Save As. Type a new name for the file and click Save. To open a list, from the Bookmarks screen choose File and then Open Bookmarks File, navigate to where the file is saved, select it and click Open.
Windows keyboard on a Mac
While it is possible to plug a Windows USB keyboard into a Mac, you'll find the Command and Options keys are reversed. To swap them over so they match the Mac keyboard, use the KMAP resource - you'll find detailed instructions on the Web at ResExcellence.
Sign your Outlook mail
To add a signature to Outlook Express 5 e-mail, select Tools, Options, Signatures and then New. Type your signature text in the Edit Signature box, enable the "Add signatures to all outgoing messages" checkbox and click OK. Your signature will now appear at the foot of all new messages.
404 possibilities
Don't give up when you get a "404 Not Found" error. Try removing everything from the right of the URL back to the first slash and pressing Enter. Repeat if you still encounter an error for as many slashes as there are in the address.
Disk space low?
Windows stores temporary files in a special folder and removes them when it shuts down normally. However, when Windows terminates abnormally, these files aren't removed. To remove them and free disk space, choose Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools and then Disk Cleanup. Click in the Temporary files checkbox and click OK.
Changing Word's default folder
Continually changing folders to files can be a nuisance. If you don't use My Documents for storing work, point Word to your preferred directory by choosing Tools, Options and then the File Locations tab. Select the Documents entry, click Modify, and then choose another folder to use and click OK.
Reader's tip
Our first reader tip comes from Harold Chu, who has a great idea for organising the entries in your Program list.
"If the programs in your Windows 98 Start menu are in disarray, sort them into alphabetical order to make them easier to use," says Harold. "To do this, choose Start and Programs and, instead of left clicking a program to run it, right click and wait till the context menu appears. Then select Sort by Name to order the entries."
Why not be a tipster?
So you've got a great tip you think other Icon readers would enjoy? Tell us, by e-mailing your tip to icontips@helenbradley.com Each week, we print the best reader tip and, courtesy of Symantec Australia, the reader who sent the suggestion will win their choice of Norton SystemWorks 2000 (Standard Edition) for Windows, or a bundle of Norton Utilities 2000 and Norton AntiVirus 2000 for the Macintosh.
Keep your tips short (about 100 words), include your postal address and daytime phone number and remember to nominate which prize you'd like. (Note the prizes are for first-time tipsters only. If we publish more than one of your tips on different weeks, you'll get your name in print twice but you'll only win one prize!).
